Hundreds of Traditional Owner Groups and languages existed prior to settlement, many hundreds of countries and homelands within the land that is called Australia. Symbols were etched, painted or burned into pieces of wood to convey messages and handed to the Senior Leaders from the visiting Clan. Symbols were recognised throughout Traditional Owner Groups and were a widely understood language. Messages may have conveyed news of Ceremony for marriage or death, for important trade or for asking permission to pass through another’s country.
