'Yakapna Biyala' 'Family Tree' - Commission 2019.
We are connected before birth and beyond into the dreamtime. At the root of every family are our elders; they are the foundation of all things learned and passed on. Though generations may separate us – we are spiritually linked and maintain deep rooted respect for their knowledge, for their oral history as passed down from their elders and stories. These are the ways of our old people as done for thousands of years.
Caring for family and maintaining connection is the heart of our culture. Our children learn this from our elders and carry it on through their lives. Yakapna Biyala represents family connection and the generations before us. Though we are separated through time we still maintain deep respect and love for our kinship unit.
At the heart of the tree is the shield representing strength, though the roots spread wide we are from the same seed. The lines through the silhouetted people represent the spiritual thread connecting each member in the family tree – one seed. From infancy to old age it remains the same, never changing and continuing to the next generation.
Though no family is the same the connection remains the same.
Love. Respect. Honour.
