‘Dunguludja Malka - Strong Shield'
Dunguludga Malka represents the strength of culture, the backbone of all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. It is a force to be reckoned with, the absolute resistance to loss of identity and who we are as a people. The shield is sectioned into smaller partitions, each equally important and significant to our culture.
The centre circle represents our Ancestors and Elders, the knowledge holders and lore men and women who have instilled and passed on our sacred song-lines, our art and stories and traditional knowledge. They are connected in unbroken circles signifying our ongoing resilience and strength.
Around the circle are five portions representing our connection to culture, they signify the spiritual link we share with the land, our sacred waterways, the valleys and mountains, the stories in the stars – and lastly – our spirit. The gum leaves symbolise cleansing and healing, new beginnings, the spiritual strength that comes from connecting to all that makes us who we are.
The upper and lower portions of the shield stand for the ‘before and after’ of time, what was and what will be. The early dawn sky represents change, a new beginning. We draw from the strength of our Community connecting us throughout our lives to the essence of our culture. Respect. Resilience. Strength.
